Podcast interview: WWI Centennial News

Last week, Theo Mayer interviewed the Eckards for the weekly podcast “WW1 Centennial News for September 07, 2018 – Episode #88.” These podcasts are held to educate the nation about World War I during the two years leading up to the Centennial Commemoration.

The 100 Cities/100 Memorials segment includes interviews with those behind the rescue of WWI memorials which have been awarded the official designation of National World War I Centennial Memorial, which the rifle range was awarded in May.

The WWI Centennial Commission was established by the World War One Centennial Commission Act, passed by the 112th Congress and signed by the President on January 16, 2013. The WWI Centennial Commission Act gave the Commission, among other things, the authority to designate memorials to the service of members of the United States Armed Forces in World War I.

In the News – April 11-12, 2018

A very nice full-length spread was published in the The State Port Pilot, featuring stories in the recap posted yesterday.

These include the Eagle Scout Service Project by local Boy Scout Ethan Pannkuk, and the World War I Ceremony held at the rifle range on Friday. Click here to read both.

Status Update: Honor a Brunswick County World War I Veteran

On November 11, 2017, The Friends of Fort Caswell Rifle Range began the year-long commemoration of the end of World War I. A memorial to Brunswick County WWI veterans is planned for November 11, 2018 at the site of the 1918 Fort Caswell Rifle Range.

It’s been about two months since “Honor a Brunswick County World War I Veteran” began. Much has happened.

The 700+ Brunswick County WWI veteran names were gathered from records and the list was created on the website. Click here for the list or use the blue button on the side of every page. Click here for the list of donors and the veteran they honored or use the blue button on the side of every page.

To date, 110 veterans have been honored with a donation.

A Frequently Asked Questions (FAQ) was created to assist in choosing a veteran to honor.

 

A design for the WWI Memorial for Brunswick County veterans was chosen, based on a sketch by Helen Radcliffe.

A logo was created.

The following WWI Profiles about Brunswick County veterans were posted to the blog using historical documents. Except for Nurse Williams, profiles are focused on veterans who were Wounded, KIA, Died of Wounds or Disease. More profiles are planned. Subscribe or visit the website often!

Dorman L. Mercer, probably the longest living Brunswick County WWI veteran (Dorman passed away in 1996 at age 102).

Susan Adkins Williams, the only known WWI nurse born and raised in Brunswick County.

From the 365th Infantry, 92nd Division “Buffalo Soldiers”

William Frederick Brooks
William James Gordon
Robert Bollie Stanley, Brunswick County’s only known POW.

From the 105th Engineers, 30th Division “Old Hickory”

Norma Eckard, president of Friends of Fort Caswell Rifle Range, spoke to the Brunswick County Historical Society. Local media reported.

The Fort Caswell Rifle Range was featured in several publications this month.

South Brunswick Magazine published a wonderful overview of the accomplishments and goals of the Friends, including many photographs.

The State Port Pilot included information about Historic Wilmington Foundation’s traveling exhibit of the 2017 most threatened historic places, which features Brunswick County’s John N. Smith Cemetery in Southport and the Fort Caswell Rifle Range.

In the News – May 2017

The Fort Caswell Rifle Range Derby Day fundraiser and Commemoration of US Involvement in World War I were recently featured in several publications. More links will be added soon.

 

The National Centennial flag is admired by some of the valuable volunteers that recently worked at the Derby fundraiser. Pictured are: (Left to right) Helen Radcliffe, Betsy Hamer, Jayne Rankin, Norma Eckard, Connie Hendrix and Dianna Suttle. The centennial flag will continue to be used at future events to commemorate the 100th anniversary of World War 1.

 

The North Carolina Daughters of the American Revolution newsletter for the month of May, (courtesy of The Tar Heel Patriot, Patricia Poe, Editor), included four pages dedicated to the recent commemoration and a feature on the rifle range. Read the pages here.

Norman Sprinthall’s letter to the editor to Star News was published on Thursday, May 11. It’s the second letter on this page.

In the News – February 2017

The Fort Caswell Rifle Range was recently featured in local newspapers. The photo above shows the tilted center wall that is the focus of fundraising efforts.

The collection of World War I photographs of family members continues in preparation for this year’s Derby Day fundraiser in May.

Read The State Port Pilot’s Effort aimed at saving rifle pit for additional details along with a photograph of the presentation of the $500 check from Dave Kesterson, senior vice-president at First Bank.

The Brunswick Beacon’s feature includes a photograph of Norman Sprinthall against the backdrop of the World War I Wall of Honor.
